December 21 st ~ 2:35 p.m.

Sweet-tooth Santa was African-American, about five-six, and built like a miniature linebacker. His name was Dominic Johnson, and his record was clean other than two shoplifting charges. He seemed willing to talk, and I planned to let Barnes take a crack at interrogating him. It was her collar, after all. But I’d insisted we wait for his mother to arrive. His school ID said he was only thirteen.

Then the call came in, another smash-and-grab at a high-end gift shop, just forty minutes after the candy store had been hit. And the gift shop was on the opposite side of town from the candy store.

Damn! The pattern was starting to make sense.
